Nearly two years after the February 9, 2023 death of Crystal McCrory Jones was ruled a suicide, KNOE revisited her case as her family continued raising questions about whether the investigation was thorough enough to support that conclusion.

This report is especially significant because the concerns are not coming from Crystal’s family alone.

Private investigator Lindsey Smith and her team independently examined Crystal’s case, reviewing available records, conducting interviews, and identifying questions they believed deserved further examination. Their work provided something Crystal’s family had been searching for from the beginning: an experienced investigator willing to look at the available information without promising a particular answer.

Lindsey has never told our family what she thought we wanted to hear. She has remained focused on facts, evidence, investigative procedure, and the questions that can—and cannot—be answered by the information that was preserved.

Through her investigation, Lindsey and her team conducted interviews and gathered information that our family believes should have been explored during the original investigation. Yet the interviews and information gathered by the private investigative team have never been reviewed by the West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office, the West Carroll Parish Coroner, or the District Attorney’s Office.

That distinction matters.

Our position has never been that every unanswered question proves Crystal was murdered. It has never been that every mistake proves misconduct. And it has never been that an investigation must produce the conclusion our family wants.

The concern is much more fundamental:

Was the original investigation comprehensive enough for the evidence to support the conclusion that was reached?

KNOE’s reporting gave Crystal’s family and private investigator an opportunity to publicly explain why, nearly two years later, those concerns had not disappeared.

Crystal deserves to be remembered as more than a ruling on a death certificate. And every family confronted with a sudden, unexpected death deserves confidence that the scene was thoroughly examined, relevant evidence was preserved, appropriate interviews were conducted, and reasonable investigative steps were taken before a final conclusion became the story everyone was expected to accept.

That principle extends far beyond Crystal’s case.

We are not demanding a particular answer. We are demanding an investigation capable of producing a trustworthy one.
